Top 10 Culinary Specialties in Luxembourg
Yum-yum! We can already hear your stomach crying for food, wondering what it can get to eat during your stay.
You may be wondering what Luxembourg cuisine has to offer: the dishes are quite simple, but hearty, most coming from the region's strong farming activity. However, there is also a certain cultural mix of countries that Luxembourg borders. It is therefore not uncommon to eat a meal where the taste reminds us of European, Belgian, or even German flavors. Partly composed of quality drinks and tender meats, here are the essential dishes to remember if you're visiting Luxembourg. Ready to let your appetite take over?
What to eat in Luxembourg?
1. Bouneschlupp

While its pronunciation proves to be difficult, tasting this homemade soup is nonetheless easy, as it is so delicious. Meaning "bean soup", "Bouneschlupp" is a hot and comforting dish to be eaten preferably in winter when the climate is harsh. It has the ability to invigorate the body and provide vitamins. Its composition? The famous beans of course, potatoes, bacon, some carrot pieces, leeks, and onions to accompany everything. Cooked in a large pot, this soup with a few slices of bread will delight your stomach.
2. Kuddelfleck

"Kuddelfleck" or "tripe" if we want to call it Luxembourg style, is considered by many as the national dish of the Grand Duchy. Behind its crispy side, hides beef that has been cooked and fried in oil or fat for the pleasure of your taste buds. The base used? These are either the tripe or organs that make up the beef's stomach that are used for preparing this dish. Luxembourgers like to sprinkle tomato sauce on it before tasting, which has the effect of bringing out the tender taste of the meat.
3. Traïpen

What do we get by combining lungs, offal, tongue and kidneys in minced pork? The legendary Luxembourg sausage called blood sausage! Seasoned with salt, pepper, and other traditional aromatics, cooks like to add what is called "Bounekräiichen", a variety typical of the region that brings a particular flavor that we couldn't really describe to you. What we do know, however, is that traïpen is a hit with Luxembourg restaurateurs.
4. Fierkelsjelli

No doubt! It's only in Luxembourg that you can eat a dish like this. "Fierkelsjelli" has a particularity of its own, that of serving jellied piglet (yes you read correctly). With an egg and a few tomato slices, this meal comes straight from Luxembourg's farming culture. It remains appreciated by the city's inhabitants, who like to eat it with fresh bread and a good glass of wine, which Luxembourg has the secret for.
5. Fritür vun der Musel

It's not just meat that is consumed in the country. Fish is also regularly celebrated, to the great joy of pesco-vegetarians. These small fish caught in the Moselle in general, are fried in boiling oil and are consequently particularly crispy. With a small fresh and crunchy salad on the side, it's a dish that can also be eaten as a starter. One precaution, watch out for the bones!
6. Pâté Riesling

It's a must-have, a great classic of Luxembourg cuisine. Depending on your preferences, you can enjoy it with veal (for some the best version), salmon, and beef. With a golden crust and a rather enticing smell, it's the kind of starter that we like to serve during big occasions, during holidays.
7. Questschentaart

Savory is pleasant to eat during meals, but what about sugar for desserts? If there is indeed a sweet dish that when whispered in the ear of Luxembourgers makes them shiver, it's the "Questschentaart" tart. It is cooked with plums called quetsches, which have a slightly tart taste, and which can only be picked during the month of August. Just at first glance, this dessert deserves its place in a museum as it looks like a work of art, with its pieces of plums finely placed one after another.
8. Beer

We know you were eagerly waiting for this one. Luxembourg is known, just like Germany, for being among the countries with the best beer varieties in the world. But which one to taste first? We recommend the "Bofferding" brands, as well as "Battin". The divine golden creamy nectar that will flow down your throat with the usual divine white foam will make you want to stay in Luxembourg for life! Savor in moderation!
9. Judd mat Gaardebounen

For many, it's a gourmet and convivial dish. After a day spent visiting the country's surroundings, you'll be happy to find yourself at the family table to enjoy this smoked pork collar with broad beans. With some chopped onions, bacon, and potatoes, this dish is served hot. While tasting, your taste buds will be lightly tickled by the bay leaf, clove, savory, and finally... the beans.
10. Stollen

This dessert is quite well known around the world and has its roots in Germany. It was subsequently established in Luxembourg, as well as in Belgium. After all, everyone loves raisins wrapped in cake batter made with flour, milk and eggs covered with powdered sugar, right? Even if it's possible to consume it at any time of the year, it's at Christmas that it's most highlighted. Accompanied by a good glass of wine, you're all set! And to work up an appetite for it, our audio-guided tour of Luxembourg takes in nineteen stops across the upper town.
