Yes, Carcassonne is a city where Mediterranean fervor is cultivated through unique musical gatherings, sometimes improvised around a café. Attracting more and more spectators each year, festivals, street performances and theater plays are the drumbeat of the cultural season.
Not to mention the sporting events, eagerly awaited by locals and essential in the annual program. Indeed! Remember, the capital of Aude is a fervent supporter of US Carcassonne, its rugby club formerly champion of France.

Where to go out in Carcassonne? Our selection of recurring events
Are you flexible with your dates for your stay in Carcassonne? Certain key events can guide you in choosing your dates. While the cultural program varies enormously from year to year, certain highlights are recurring and awaited by all. Proof with our top 3 Carcassonne events!
1. The Embrasement of the City
Date or period: The evening of July 14th.
Access: Free
Description: The first embrasement of the medieval city took place in 1898, to celebrate the arrival of notable figures from Art, literature and politics. Shows of all kinds were organized in their honor. It was then that Achille Rouquet – a local multidisciplinary artist – had the brilliant idea to "set the city ablaze" at night, to close the celebrations. The success of this unique fireworks display was such that the performance has been renewed every year since, on the evening of July 14th. 700,000 people flock to attend the celebration, including a large international audience.
Good to know: Position yourself quickly to enjoy the best viewpoints. The national holiday means entertainment (and excitement) in all corners of the country, but in Carcassonne, it's on a whole different scale!
