1. The Embrasement of the City
Date or period: The evening of July 14th.

Description: The first embrasement of the medieval city took place in 1898, to celebrate the arrival of notable figures from Art, literature and politics. Shows of all kinds were organized in their honor. It was then that Achille Rouquet – a local multidisciplinary artist – had the brilliant idea to "set the city ablaze" at night, to close the celebrations. The success of this unique fireworks display was such that the performance has been renewed every year since, on the evening of July 14th. 700,000 people flock to attend the celebration, including a large international audience.
Good to know: Position yourself quickly to enjoy the best viewpoints. The national holiday means entertainment (and excitement) in all corners of the country, but in Carcassonne, it's on a whole different scale!
2. The Feria de Carcassonne
Date or period: End of August, for 4 days.

Description: Summer is coming to an end and the city wants to celebrate the beautiful days properly... With Latin music! In a popular and festive atmosphere, between concerts, dances and flavorful cuisine: it's the beginning of the Feria. To the rhythm of flamenco dancers' steps, head to the fifty or so bodegas installed to taste typical cuisine. On the menu: paellas, tapas, caramelos... No mercy for croissants! Uh... tapas.
Good to know: Head to André Chénier square, transformed into a wild Campo! The space has fallen into the hands of dancers, composed of initiates and one-day visitors. Join them and bring to life Sevillian dances, Latin songs, rock and French variety.
3. The Festival de Carcassonne

Description: A true reference among festivals of the Grand Sud, its constant evolution attracts more visitors each year. The event blossoms in a unique setting: the medieval city of Carcassonne. During the month of July, you will attend more than a hundred shows, the vast majority of which is accessible for free. Theater, opera, classical orchestras, dance and internationally renowned artists will amaze all audiences. Like a cultural and performing arts rendezvous that no passing visitor should miss.
