You'll have time to contemplate the landscape through your cabin while ascending to the summit. Once you get off your train, you'll find yourself on a site classified as UNESCO World Heritage and labeled Grand Site de France. Perched at 1,465 meters altitude, you'll be amazed by the beauty of the landscape and the ensemble of inactive volcanoes covered with vegetation that align.

2- Visit the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption

Category: Cultural

Description: A stay in Clermont-Ferrand cannot be concluded without visiting the sumptuous cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, classified as a Historic Monument. Its breathtaking architecture and black color leave everyone speechless. Construction began in the 13th century after the desire of Bishop Hugues de la Tour. After six centuries of refinement, the construction was completed. The particularity of this cathedral is its exterior façades, of a very black color. This color comes from the materials and stones used, giving this surprising aspect. It is built from a volcanic rock called Volvic stone. This rock comes from lava flows from Puy de la Nugère in Volvic. Its characteristics made this stone widely used in Clermont construction. Its atypical, dark architecture promises a strong contrast with the interior.

Description: As if frozen in time, the Montferrand district is a place not to be missed during your Auvergne stay. The district was founded in the 12th century by the Counts of Auvergne Montferrand. Located 4 kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand, the Montferrand district was once a county city, in conflict with its Clermont neighbor which was a bishops' city. Several conflicts took place between these cities separated by a few kilometers until 1630 during the Edict of Troyes, aimed at reunifying the two cities. Montferrand kept some autonomy until 1732, the year when Louis XV applied the reunification of these two cities, giving birth to Clermont-Ferrand. For your information: the Montferrand Medieval Festival, a traditional celebration that will plunge you straight into the Middle Ages, takes place in June.
