Pont du Gard in a nutshell

The Pont du Gard is an aqueduct that was built during Antiquity. Although it appears monumental on its own, it is actually only a small part of a superstructure that extends over more than 50 km, from Uzès to Nîmes. It was indeed built to supply the water needs of the capital of the Augustan colony.

The latter was established in the region in the 1st century AD. It was therefore the particularly renowned engineers of the Roman Empire who were commissioned to design the aqueduct, despite the presence of thick scrubland and multiple ditches. It was these same constraints that forced them to imagine numerous tunnels and as many bridges.

The Pont du Gard is today the most important vestige of the original aqueduct. It consists of 49 arches, measures 275 meters long and 49 meters high. Still standing after several centuries, it was designed to withstand the particularly fierce floods of the Gardon.

Today, the Pont du Gard enjoys an important reputation in France. The site has moreover been entirely developed to receive the public and allow them to appreciate the beauty of the building. There is a museum hosting various exhibitions, a media library and recreational areas for children, and much more.

Note: since 1985, the Pont du Gard has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
