Although Washington is the capital of the United States, it is not the most visited city in the country. It ranks only 8th behind other major cities like New York, Miami, or Los Angeles, which together constitute a significant part of American tourism. Washington is a much more peaceful city than most major American cities. For comparison, about 700,000 American citizens live in the capital, compared to almost 9 million in New York. The fact that Washington is a less touristy city makes the stay more authentic. It's therefore a great destination to visit the United States with many monuments to discover!
