Art Gallery of New South Wales

This is one of the main museums in Sydney, and in Australia as a whole. Inside, you will find collections of Australian, European, and Asian art, making it the largest public art gallery in Sydney. The Art Academy was founded in 1871, but it wasn’t until 1885 that the first collections were displayed here. The building you see before you, however, was constructed from 1896 onwards to replace the previous one. Its creators wanted it to become a true “classical temple to art.” And it’s fair to say that they succeeded — today, the museum showcases more than 40,000 works, spanning from the Middle Ages to the present day, including Aboriginal art, art photography, and modern art. It welcomes over a million visitors each year. Go ahead and step inside if you’re an art lover!
