A majestic appearance, a precious name, and a rich history, the Old Treasury Building has it all. The building was originally designed in 1886 following a competition for the construction of "new public offices" on Treasury Square. The Prime Minister, the Colonial Secretary, and the other future occupants had to wait ten years for the work to be completed before settling into this brand-new building. By the late 1890s and early 1900s, the Old Treasury Building had been the site of many public celebrations. These included the reopening of Victoria Bridge, previously swept away by floods, and Commonwealth Day, marking Australia's entry to the British Empire. However, it’s not all been joyful. The building has lived through war, during which its windows were sealed and fitted with metal shutters. After 100 years of occupation, government officials moved out, leaving an empty space behind these walls. After much reflection and debate, a new chapter began in 1995 with the inauguration of the present-day Treasury Casino & Hotel, which attracted more than two million visitors in its first year. Now that’s what you call a grand entrance!
