You’re now standing in what’s known as the DomQuartier, a remarkable space that has stood the test of time and offers a journey through centuries of Salzburg’s history. This area is a true testament to the vision of the city’s prince-archbishops, the powerful nobles who once ruled Salzburg and transformed it into a shining example of Italian Renaissance influence north of the Alps. All around you, from St. Peter’s Church to St. Rupert’s Cathedral, you’ll see stunning Baroque architecture that turns this entire district into an open-air museum. And inside the buildings, particularly in the former residence of the prince-archbishops, you’ll find thousands of works of art. But who exactly were these prince-archbishops we keep hearing about? Starting as early as the 7th century, Salzburg became the capital of its own archbishopric, which was itself a state within the Holy Roman Empire. That meant these church leaders held both religious and political power until 1803. So yes, they were incredibly wealthy and influential, and they used that influence to shape the city into something truly magnificent. In fact, Salzburg has earned the nickname “The Rome of Austria” thanks to its spectacular buildings, many of which you’ll find right here in the DomQuartier. If you purchase a ticket, you’ll be able to explore the former archbishops’ residence and gallery, the Cathedral Museum, and the St. Peter Museum. So take your time wandering through this historic heart of Salzburg and soak in the rich history and breathtaking architecture of Austria’s fourth-largest city!
