You’re standing at the entrance to the Archéoforum, right beneath Saint-Lambert Square, in the very heart of old Liège. Step through these doors and you begin a one-of-a-kind journey through time, from Prehistory all the way to the eighteenth century. As you make your way down into this vast underground space of nearly 4,000 square meters, you’ll come across traces of the region’s first inhabitants, followed by the remains of a grand Gallo-Roman villa, complete with its clever underfloor heating system, the hypocaust. A little further on, you’ll see the massive foundations of the Gothic cathedral of Our Lady and Saint Lambert, torn down during the Revolution but still striking even in ruins. Walkways, panels, and digital tools like augmented reality bring these lost monuments back to life, letting you travel through nine thousand years of Liège’s history—right beneath your feet.
