A major public space in Antwerp, the Groenplaats strikes the perfect balance between the city’s vibrant energy and moments of calm. Like any great square, it's a lively crossroads full of pedestrians and a go-to spot to relax, enjoy a drink or a bite, and catch some street performances. This bustling vibe is a sharp contrast to its past when, in the 18th century, it was known as the Groen Kerhof, or "Green Cemetery." Back then, it was the city’s burial ground, as the Austrian occupiers banned any graves inside the city walls. As you wander around, you’ll spot the statue of Peter Paul Rubens, the renowned 17th-century Flemish painter so adored by Antwerp, and soon enough, you'll see why.
