This is Christ Church Cathedral, an Anglican church dedicated—as its name suggests—to Jesus Christ. Anglicanism is often seen as a middle way between Catholicism and Protestantism—a sort of theological compromise that tries to keep everyone more or less happy.The movement began in 16th century England from a disagreement between King Henry VIII and the Pope. Hence, he seperated from Rome and established the Church of England. The term “Anglican” actually comes from the Latin word meaning “of English origin.” Far away from the British Isles, the very first Anglican church was founded right here in Canada—in the city of Quebec. Christ Church Cathedral was built in 1859 in a neo-Gothic style and now counts as a National Historic Site. However, beneath the cathedral lies a whole other world: the Promenades Cathédrale, an underground shopping mall that forms part of Montreal’s extensive underground city. The perfect place to seek refuge from the city’s chilly winters.
