Raekoja plats

Raekoja plats has been the beating heart of the medieval city since the 11th century. Entirely pedestrian, the square buzzes with life at all hours of the day, and is the main gathering place for locals and visitors. Once home to wealthy merchants, the old houses now host cafés and taverns that invite you to sit out on the terrace when the sun is shining. Throughout the year, the square hosts events and craft fairs that echo its historic past. In winter, the Christmas market transforms it into a fairytale scene. In June, the Old Town Festival brings it to life with traditional food, music, and costumed minstrels wandering the streets. There’s always something happening here, but if you ever feel a bit lost in the crowd, look down. A compass rose is set into the cobblestone, pointing you toward the five spires of the Old Town. It’s a clever and charming way to get your bearings.
