The famous Art Deco casino is another Biarritz landmark! Imagine what it was like back then. We're in the 1920s. World War I is finally over. New buildings are under construction. Youths all over the world want to LIVE, to consume, to exist. These are the famous Roaring Twenties. Biarritz was at the height of its popularity. The casino was a bit old-fashioned, and art nouveau was no longer trendy, so the town launched a project to build a new establishment overlooking the sea. The city also wanted to compete with the resounding success of the Bellevue hotel-casino, which had opened in 1858. However, the plan didn't go exactly as expected: after a number of twists and turns, it was the owner of the Bellevue who ended up at the helm of the new Casino! Well, there was no point in trying to compete with him. The new Casino, in the new Art Deco style, was inaugurated in 1929 in grand style. After being abandoned from the late 80s onwards, it was completely renovated 10 years later, regaining its former glory. Nowadays, Biarritz's municipal casino is listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments to ensure that it will always be protected. You can of course visit the interior, and why not have a drink on the pleasant terrace.
