We are now in the heart of the Palais Royal, composed of the buildings and the garden surrounding you. Built in the 17th century by Cardinal Richelieu as a luxurious residence, it became the Palais Royal when the Queen of France Anne of Austria moved in with her two sons, Louis XIV, the future Sun King, and Philippe d'Orléans. There is so much history hidden behind these walls. You can find out more by listening to the dedicated tour on the app! But let’s get back to where we were, shall we? Do you recognise this garden? This is where Emily would come to eat during her lunch break! We’re right beside her workplace, and she ate alone here at first as her colleagues didn’t want to spend time with her. This is where she’ll meet Mindy, an American who has been living in Paris for a year. Soon close friends, they’ll regularly meet up here for lunch and gossip about their latest drama. Known for her brutal honesty and sense of humour, Mindy teaches Emily about Parisians’ habits to help her become one of them, given that they don’t have the same ways as Americans. It’s also in this very spot that we hear Mindy sing in front of her friend for the first time. She sings La Vie en Rose by Édith Piaf, impressing more than one as many people will stop to listen! Fun fact: the actress playing Mindy, Ashley Park, is a Broadway star in real life. So yes, that’s her real voice when singing. On the other side, not far from here, you’ll find the prestigious restaurant Le Grand Véfour – where Emily will book a table for her team. However, she makes a common mistake between Americans and the French about dates. In the US, the month comes before the day. So if you want to book a table for the 11th of August, you’d write 08/11. Whereas in France, the day comes first: so you write 11/08. Emily and her colleagues were in for quite a surprise when they arrived at the restaurant, only to discover she had booked for the wrong date! Fortunately, Gabriel was there to save the day, graciously welcoming them into his restaurant. Speaking of restaurants, Le Grand Véfour is indeed real—it's actually one of the oldest restaurants in the world! Yes, you heard me right! Many memorable figures have dined here, including Victor Hugo, George Sand, and other celebrated names. You might be even more surprised to learn that kings, queens, and famous fashion designers have all enjoyed meals at this historic establishment! For many years, the restaurant boasted three Michelin stars. An ultra-prestigious place, as you can imagine, which now offers a more accessible menu than in the past, but one that's just as delicious. We understand why it is featured in the series!
