Jean Jaurès

Here, on Place Jean Jaurès just behind City Hall, let’s pause for a moment in front of this bust to learn about the man whose name appears in so many towns across France. Step closer to the sculpture and meet Jean Jaurès, a towering figure of French socialism and a passionate champion of workers’ rights. A gifted journalist and a remarkable orator, Jaurès devoted his life to three great causes: peace, workers’ rights, and social justice. A visionary, he dreamed of uniting working-class people beyond their divisions and was one of the founders of the French Section of the Workers’ International, the forerunner of today’s Socialist Party. But why honor him here in Saint-Étienne? The answer can be summed up in one word: industry. In this city shaped by steel and woven with silk, Jaurès’s fight for workers’ dignity struck a deep chord. The miners, metalworkers, and textile laborers of Saint-Étienne saw in him a genuine defender of their living and working conditions. Tragically assassinated in 1914, on the eve of the First World War he worked so hard to prevent, Jaurès left behind an extraordinary legacy. This bust stands as a tribute to Saint-Étienne’s connection to the ideals of social justice and solidarity he embodied.
