To your right, you’ll see Place Bernard Stasi opening up before you. Surrounded by distinctive red buildings and arcades, this square was once known as Place des Arcades, a name inspired by its architecture. In 2011, it was renamed in honor of Bernard Stasi, who had just passed away. A prominent figure in Épernay’s history, Stasi served as the city’s mayor from 1970 to 1977 and again from 1983 to 2000. Beyond that, he had an impressive political career—he was a deputy, minister, ombudsman of the Republic, president of the Champagne-Ardenne Regional Council, and a member of the European Parliament. To recognize his many contributions, the city gave his name to this central square and installed a commemorative stele in his memory. Created in 2012 by artist Boris Lejeune, the monument features a bronze engraving of the politician. Feel free to walk across the square to get a closer look.
