Place de la Halle

You’re now standing on Place de la Halle, right in the heart of Beaune’s historic centre. The square gets its name from the old covered market halls that once stood here—long gone, but still remembered. Just steps away are the famous Hospices de Beaune, with their colourful tiled roof that’s become one of the city’s most iconic sights. Thanks to that, the square is always buzzing, surrounded by restaurants, shops and wine cellars. Every Saturday morning, it transforms into a bustling market that spills into the nearby streets, offering a feast for the senses. You’ll find everything from seasonal vegetables to local cheeses, cured meats, jams, honey, gingerbread and classic Burgundy specialities. The local food culture is everywhere here—think slow-cooked boeuf bourguignon with pinot noir, poached eggs in red wine sauce, parsleyed ham, warm gougères and of course the famous Burgundy snails, cooked à la bourguignonne with garlic, butter and parsley. These are comforting, flavour-packed dishes that bring to mind family kitchens and red-checkered tablecloths. Just a few minutes from here, the Fallot Mustard Mill has been carrying on Burgundy’s traditional mustard-making craft since the 19th century, making it a true staple of the region’s culinary heritage. You can tour the site and browse the shop, where you’ll find a wide range of mustards to taste and take home. Cheese lovers are in for a treat too. The star of the show is Époisses, a strong cheese with roots going back to the 16th century. But you’ll also find Brillat-Savarin, a rich and creamy triple-cream cheese, Soumaintrain, which is milder, and Charolais, made further south in the region. And for wine? You couldn’t be in a better spot. Beaune is surrounded by legendary villages like Pommard, Meursault, Volnay and Corton. Wine is everywhere here, and if you’re curious to learn more, just head underground—there are wine cellars beneath nearly every street. Got a sweet tooth? Try the poached pear in spiced red wine—it’s tender, fragrant and incredibly comforting. You’ll also find blackcurrant jam tarts, Dijon gingerbread, soft nonnettes filled with orange marmalade, and fluffy œufs à la neige topped with caramel. It’s a paradise for food lovers—and the perfect place to taste your way through Burgundy’s finest flavours.
