You’re now standing on Place de la Liberté — the true beating heart of Sarlat. This is where everything happens, where locals, travellers, merchants, and artists all come together in a lively mix that captures the spirit of the town. Since the Middle Ages, this square has been Sarlat’s main gathering place, and it still plays that role today. It only takes a moment of watching it buzz with life to feel its energy. Look around you — the facades glow with the warm golden tones of the Périgord’s signature stone. On the corner stands the Hôtel de Ville, an elegant 17th-century building that replaced the old medieval town hall from the 13th century. With its graceful arcades opening onto the square, it brings a sense of dignity and continuity to the heart of town. For over three hundred years, it has stood as a symbol of civic life, bridging Sarlat’s medieval past with its modern present. Just opposite, the solid, beautiful form of the former Church of Sainte-Marie — now transformed into a covered market by architect Jean Nouvel — completes this perfect picture of old and new. Between these landmarks, the square forms a harmonious stage lined with grand stone houses, bustling cafés, and inviting restaurant terraces that spring to life as soon as the sun comes out. But more than anything, Place de la Liberté is known for its market. For centuries, every Wednesday and Saturday, it’s been filled with colourful stalls overflowing with the flavours of the Périgord — foie gras, truffles, walnuts, cheeses, and wines — a feast for the senses that draws visitors from near and far. In summer, the square becomes an open-air theatre, alive with street performers, music, and festivals that fill the evenings with joy. In winter, it transforms into a cosy wonderland, with twinkling lights and a charming Christmas market nestled between the golden facades. Here, everything comes together — history, food, and daily life — making Place de la Liberté not just the heart of Sarlat, but its soul.
