You’re standing in Place des Lices, one of the true landmarks of Saint-Tropez. Beneath the shade of plane trees, the square hums with life—cafés spilling onto terraces, the click of pétanque balls, bursts of laughter and lively chatter. It’s a familiar scene where locals, visitors, and the occasional celebrity all cross paths. Watching the ebb and flow here is the best way to grasp the spirit of Saint-Tropez: a kind of casual elegance where a glass of pastis sits just as naturally next to a cup of coffee. The name “Lices” comes from the fenced-off fields where medieval tournaments were once held. Here in Saint-Tropez, though, the square as we know it only appeared in the early 19th century, when the first plane trees were planted. Ever since, it’s remained the beating heart of town life. Twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, it becomes a market with products from Provence. market. From about eight until half past twelve, stalls overflow with fruit, flowers, crafts, and local produce, filling the air with color and fragrance that draw in both Tropezians and visitors alike. Every May, the town celebrates the Bravades—three days of processions, musket fire, and religious ceremonies. Place des Lices turns into the fairground for the Bravades, adding to the joyful chaos that sweeps across Saint-Tropez. But beyond these grand occasions, the square is first and foremost a meeting place. People gather here to play boules, chat in the shade, and enjoy that rare blend of simplicity and warmth that defines the Tropezian soul, far removed from the glitter of the harbor.
