The Docklands district is, unsurprisingly, filled with attractions related to Irish emigration. The most famous of them stands right before you, on the other side of the road: EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, elected as Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction from 2019 to 2021. This fascinating interactive museum is composed of video galleries, games, and dance exhibits, offering a unique way to explore Irish history and culture. The visit explains why and how 10 million Irish people left their homeland, as well as the impact of their immigration in the world. Did you know that John F. Kennedy and Che Guevara were both descendants of Irish immigrants? If the Irish hadn’t emigrated to the United States, it’s safe to say that Halloween wouldn’t be the worldwide famous celebration we know today. The holiday originally comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated by the Irish at the time. It marked the end of harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was a time when people believed that the veil between the living and the dead would be at its thinnest, allowing spirits to return to the living world. To calm wandering souls, the Celts dressed up as frightening creatures, lit bonfires, and left offerings. They also carved turnips to ward off evil spirits. When they arrived in America, there weren’t as many turnips there. They had to adapt their tradition, so they switched to pumpkins. If you’re lucky enough to be in Dublin during this season, be sure to try out the many Halloween festivities held throughout the city!
