We’ve led you all the way to the old library of Trinity College just so that we can tell you about the Book of Kells. If you’ve done some research before coming to Dublin, chances are you’ve already heard of this renowned book. Allow me to explain what it is and how to find it. The Book of Kells is one of the most famous medieval artworks in the world. It’s an illuminated manuscript dating back to the year 800. This religious work contains the four Gospels of the New Testament in Latin, along with incredible illustrations, which are as beautiful as they are rare. It’s believed that the book was made by monks from the Iona Abbey, located on an island off the coast of Scotland. Following Viking attacks, they are thought to have relocated to the Abbey of Kells. Experts believe its purpose was to be a ceremonial book kept on an altar, which could explain its illuminations enhancing the word of God. The pages are filled with geometric patterns, spirals, human figures, mythical creatures, fish, and plants, all beautifully interwoven. The colours, made from rare and costly pigments, are still remarkably vibrant today, despite the centuries passed. Different pages are showed each day to help preserve the book. It’s mindblowing—you would think it was painted just yesterday! No wonder the Book of Kells is considered a national treasure! It is displayed in the Long Room, which is worth a visit itself with its collection of 200,000 ancient books. Buying an entry ticket will grant you access to the library and the exhibition on the book, explaining the meaning and significance of the manuscript. You’ll also see the medieval harp, a powerful symbol of Ireland; an original copy of the Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland; and busts of Trinity College’s most famous alumni. A recent artwork named Gaia, representing an illuminated Earth, is also on display—as a reminder of our planet’s beauty and fragility. And if you’re fancying something more unique and immersive, don’t miss out on the Book of Kells Experience, a digital journey diving you deep into the very pages of the book.
