You’re now stepping into a charming little time capsule. The Galleria Subalpina is one of Turin’s historic shopping arcades, inspired by the elegant Parisian passages of the 19th century. It was inaugurated in 1874 and takes its name from the Subalpine Bank, which financed its construction. Its graceful glass and iron roof was a symbol of modernity at the time, while its intricate decorative touches add to the refined elegance that fills the space. The arcades have always been home to iconic spots like Caffè Baratti & Milano, one of Turin’s oldest and most prestigious cafés, the Romano café-concert, which later became a cinema, along with art galleries and antique shops. Though it suffered damage during the bombings of World War II, the gallery was carefully restored. In the 21st century, a large central flower bed was added, just as the gallery’s original designer, Pietro Carrera, had envisioned. Blending Baroque and Renaissance decorative styles, the Galleria Subalpina offers a refined and peaceful atmosphere, an ideal place to take a break and enjoy a moment in one of Turin’s timeless historic cafés.
