You’re now walking along a street with over 2,000 years of history, Strada Maggiore! This road dates back to Roman times and was part of the ancient Via Aemilia, built in 187 BC. The Via Aemilia was a major Roman road connecting Piacenza and Rimini, passing through cities like Fidenza, Parma, Modena, and Bologna. This road gave its name to the region of Emilia-Romagna, one of the richest and most developed areas in Europe, with Bologna as its capital. Strada Maggiore is also the last street in Bologna to carry the name Strada. All the others have been renamed Via. In the past, streets that began from Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, where the Two Towers stand, and led toward the city gates were given the prestigious name Strada. These were likely better maintained than other roads leading to more remote or hostile areas. Even now, Strada Maggiore is still one of Bologna’s main arteries. Lined with beautiful basilicas and noble palazzi, it’s a pleasure to explore. Feel free to continue strolling at your own pace, soaking in the architecture and atmosphere before heading off to your next stop!
