Welcome to Shinsaibashi-suji, one of the liveliest shopping streets in the city. Here, it’s almost impossible to get bored. This long covered arcade, stretching for about six hundred meters, is a real playground for shopping, discoveries, and people-watching. Look up and you’ll see the glass roof that has protected the street for decades, very convenient on rainy days or during the hot summer months, and perfect for wandering around without worrying about the weather. But the story of this place began long before sneakers and cosmetics filled the shop windows. The name Shinsaibashi comes from a bridge built in 1622 by a merchant named Okada Shinsai to cross a canal that has since disappeared. Around that bridge, shops quickly multiplied, and the street soon became an important commercial center during the Edo period. Four centuries later, the spirit remains the same, although the rhythm has clearly picked up. On your left, a large international brand. On your right, a busy drugstore where visitors fill their baskets with Japanese cosmetics. A little farther along, you’ll find fashion boutiques, 100-yen shops, souvenir stores, cafés, and even restaurants hidden on the upper floors. Everything mixes together here, and that’s exactly what gives Shinsaibashi-suji its charm. As you continue north, you’ll come across the elegant and historic Daimaru department store, a symbol of Osaka’s high-end retail since the eighteenth century. Heading south, the street naturally leads you back toward Dōtonbori, with its neon lights and vibrant energy. And chances are, you’ll find a few souvenirs here that might end up in your suitcase.
