The small white church in front of you is called Nykirken, which means “the new church,” though officially, it’s known as the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was built in 1621 to serve the inhabitants of the Nordnes district. At the time, after several local churches were destroyed by fire, they had to walk all the way to Bergen Cathedral to attend services. This “new” church was built on the ruins of a bishop’s garden, and was rebuilt several times following more fires. The cemetery that once surrounded it disappeared after a cargo ship loaded with ammunition exploded in 1944. The building you see today has been renovated many times, and now serves as a children’s church, with a special focus on families. If you step inside, you’ll see decorations made by children from the neighbourhood. You’ll also notice a sculpture of a baptismal angel descending from the ceiling on a pulley system, holding the cup used for christenings.
