Al Mirani Fort

You’re standing at the foot of Al Mirani Fort, clinging to the rock above Old Muscat. Its position alone explains its importance: from here, it was possible to watch the entrance to the bay, the Sea of Oman and every movement in the harbour. Even before the Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century, a fortification already stood on this rocky spur, showing that the Omanis had recognised the strategic value of this site very early on. In 1552, during the Ottoman capture of Muscat, the fort was besieged and taken after several days of fighting, and its defences were badly damaged. The major phase of reconstruction came later, in 1587, when the Portuguese rebuilt Al Mirani and, together with its twin fort Al Jalali on the opposite side of the bay, created a defensive system that effectively locked the harbour. Al Mirani is also said to be one of the first defensive sites in Oman to have incorporated cannons, something you can still sense today in the embrasures and the layout designed for artillery. The origin of the name “Mirani” remains uncertain: some suggest a Portuguese root linked to the word “admiral”, others a local tradition referring to a military commander, but none of these explanations can be confirmed with certainty. A popular legend adds a more colourful chapter to the fort’s story. According to this tale, a Portuguese commander fell in love with the daughter of a local merchant. The father strongly opposed the marriage, but under pressure from the commander, he appeared to agree. Only in appearance. During the wedding preparations inside the fort, he secretly removed all the gunpowder and ammunition. Once the fort was left defenceless, he sent a signal to the Omani sultan, who captured it in 1649 and drove the Portuguese out of Muscat. A clever manoeuvre, if the story is to be believed. Whether legend or reality, what stands out today is the contrast between the heavy stone defences and the calm beauty of the surrounding landscape. The fort can be visited, so if it is open during your stay, don’t hesitate to go inside to enjoy the spectacular views and explore its history from within.
