You’re standing in front of a historic complex that forms a single site. The long building running alongside the road and the large monumental gate you can see a little further ahead are both part of the Muscat Gate Museum. This is the entrance to the former fortified city of Muscat, a place that served as a strategic control point between the mountains and the sea for centuries. The gate in front of you is not a reconstruction; it was an authentic part of the city’s defensive system and controlled access to old Muscat until the 70s. Today, you can sill see its solid construction in local stone after being converted into a museum, with wide arches designed to let caravans and goods pass through. The adjoining buildings were added to the complex during its transformation into a museum. Inside, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey from the geological origins of the region and the earliest human settlements right through to the modern era, touching on major moments such as maritime trade, the arrival of Islam, the Ibadi imamate and rivalries with European powers. The galleries also explore everyday life, traditions, craftsmanship and the irrigation systems that made it possible for Muscat to grow in a challenging environment. From the upper levels, views over the mountains and the old city make it easy to understand why this spot held such a strategic place in Muscat’s history. If you wish, you can visit the museum to deepen your understanding of the city and discover more about the history of Oman.
