Welcome to Rua Ferreira Borges! This street has kept the same layout since medieval times and it’s one of the liveliest spots in the district. Look around for a moment, the bustling café terraces and the flow of students heading to or from the university speak for themselves. Speaking of the university, it’s worth noting that the street is named after José Ferreira Borges, a graduate of the University of Coimbra who was a major figure in economics, law, and politics. He even wrote the Portuguese Commercial Code in 1833. Paved with classic calçada portuguesa, alternating black and white cobblestones, Rua Ferreira Borges is home to many of the city’s best bookstores, pastry shops, cafés, and boutiques. Whether you plan to or not, chances are you’ll find yourself strolling down this street at some point, blending into the local rhythm of life.
