You’re now on George Street, one of the main shopping avenues in the Scottish capital. It was laid out in the 18th century by architect James Craig, the man behind the entire New Town of Edinburgh. The street is named after King George III, who reigned over Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 to 1820. Originally intended for the city’s wealthiest residents, it became, during the Victorian era, a prime shopping destination lined with luxury boutiques. Today, you’ll still find some of the city’s largest and most prestigious stores housed within the elegant Georgian buildings that flank the street. Stretching between St Andrew Square Garden and Charlotte Square, George Street also features statues of some of Edinburgh’s most notable figures. A truly iconic street, one you definitely shouldn’t miss!
