This small square at the foot of Calton Hill is home to two beautiful churches, St Paul’s and St George’s on your right, and St Mary’s Cathedral on your left. Formerly just St Paul’s, the first church was built between 1816 and 1818, then expanded in the late 19th century before merging in 1932 with St George’s Church, which once stood nearby, hence the double name today. It showcases a fine neo-Gothic style, quite rare in central Edinburgh where neoclassical architecture is far more common. St Mary’s Cathedral was also built in the early 19th century and has held the title of Metropolitan Cathedral since 1886. Modified throughout its history, it was inaugurated in its current form in 1978. Together, these two churches make this charming little square, marking the divide between Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town, a spot rich in history and character.
