You’re now on Edinburgh’s main street, a bustling shopping artery marking the boundary between the New Town and the Old Town. Known for its many clothing, shoe, and jewellery shops, and more besides, it’s a true paradise for anyone in the mood for a bit of retail therapy, as well as for those wanting to admire some of the finest examples of 18th-century architecture from the time the New Town was built. Most of its buildings are listed among the city’s historic monuments. Like George Street, its equally commercial parallel, it was originally designed to attract the city’s wealthiest residents, before evolving in the Victorian era into one of Edinburgh’s principal shopping streets. Feel free to stop along the way for a browse, you’ll even find a kilt shop!
