Built by the same architect as its neighbouring building, the Royal Scottish Academy showcases contemporary art that will delight true enthusiasts. Just steps from the castle, it displays Scottish paintings and sculptures for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors. Founded in 1826, the Academy also awards prizes, grants, and residencies to artists working in Scotland. Its location marks a symbolic boundary too, it stands right at the edge of the Old Town, where you’ve just come from, and the New Town, dating from the 18th century, which begins on the other side of Princes Street.
