On your left stands the Scottish National Gallery, Scotland’s national art museum, home to some of the world’s greatest masterpieces since it first opened in 1859. Admission is completely free, and inside you can admire sculptures and paintings by some of Europe’s most celebrated artists, from the Renaissance to the Post-Impressionist period of the late 19th century. It’s the largest collection of fine art in Scotland, and like many museums in the UK, it offers visitors the chance to explore it at no cost. If art is your thing, this is the perfect opportunity to indulge, you’ll come face to face with works by the likes of Velázquez, Cézanne, and Van Gogh, all within a striking neoclassical building in the very heart of Edinburgh.
