This striking sculpture at the foot of Mount Urgull is called Empty Construction. It was created by Jorge Oteiza, a major Basque artist behind numerous renowned sculptures and buildings across Spain. An iconic figure in contemporary art, this sculpture was awarded a prize at the São Paulo Biennial, an international art exhibition that recognises outstanding talent from around the world. Oteiza received the International Sculpture Prize in 1957, followed by Spain’s Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 1985. He’s seen as a pioneer of abstract sculpture in the Basque Country. Much of his work uses light and dynamic materials to explore the concept of emptiness and the active use of space. This striking piece stands proudly along this part of the Paseo Nuevo, elegantly bridging sea and mountain.
