Here on Weyler Square, you're looking at the very first luxury hotel in the city - and actually in all of Spain! This was commissioned by King Alfonso XIII back in 1903. He simply thought it wasn't right that his country lacked proper establishments to welcome visiting nobility, so he commissioned the construction of this building. The result is another stunning example of Palma's Modernist architecture, designed by the famous Lluís Domènech i Montaner - the same genius who gave us Barcelona's magnificent Palau de la Música Catalana. When this palace hotel first opened its doors, it was absolutely cutting-edge! We're talking about incredible innovations for the time - electricity on every floor, elevators, and central heating. Can you imagine how revolutionary that must have felt? This remained the city's most prestigious hotel right up until it closed at the start of the Civil War in 1936. Today, it's been beautifully transformed into the CaixaForum Foundation Museum. Inside, you'll find a permanent collection by Catalan painter Anglada Camarasa, plus some really impressive international traveling exhibitions.
