San Sebastian is one of those cities you could call a “capital of gastronomy.” Spain is already world-famous for its tapas, those small bites made from cured meats, cheese, fish, or vegetables, often drizzled with olive oil or topped with sauces and served with a drink and some bread. But here in San Sebastian, it’s all about the pintxos, and you’ll find them everywhere! Pintxos are a type of tapas, also enjoyed with a drink, but their preparation is quite specific. They’re always served on a slice of bread and topped with the usual fish, seafood, cured meats, or vegetables, but what makes them unique is the small skewer or toothpick that holds them together. The word pintxo actually comes from the Spanish verb pinchar, which means “to pierce.” They’re usually larger than tapas and served one at a time, so don’t expect a full plate of food. Still, they’re an absolute must, pintxos are an essential part of Basque culinary tradition! Of course, they’re not the only local speciality. If you step into La Bretxa Market on your left, you’ll get a great taste of what San Sebastian has to offer. This shopping centre combines food stalls with clothing and accessory shops, but the real highlight is the fresh produce. In San Sebastian, seafood takes centre stage. Think baked spider crab, hake cheeks in green sauce, clams, squid, roasted sea bream… It’s a paradise for seafood lovers. All the more so, since the city is renowned worldwide for the outstanding quality of its ingredients. So take your time, explore, and enjoy the best of what San Sebastian has to offer!
