You’ll need to climb a little to fully enjoy Mount Urgull, one of the two hills that define San Sebastian’s skyline. Once you reach the top, you’ll get a stunning view over the city, the bay, and Mount Igueldo. Thanks to its strategic location, Mount Urgull became a military stronghold as early as the 12th century, and it was gradually fortified to protect the city from enemy attacks. Traces of this rich past are still visible today, most notably parts of the old defensive walls and the remains of the Mota Castle, which sits at the summit. It’s a popular walking spot, offering spectacular views of the sea on one side and the city on the other, set against a lush green backdrop. Be sure to take your time on the way up and stop at the various viewpoints, it’s a wonderful way to escape the buzz of the city!
