Welcome to one of Palma's most legendary squares - the Plaça de Cort, or "Court Square" in English. This is where everything began! This is where James II gathered with the four nobles who had helped him conquer the city; together they divided up Palma into eight parts - four for the king and one for each of his lords. That impressive building in front of you? That's Palma's City Hall. Now, it was completely rebuilt in the 17th century by the finest artists of the day to serve as the Palace of Justice for the King of Majorca - which is exactly why this square got its name! But here's the fascinating part - this building has actually been here much, much longer. It started life back in the Middle Ages as a hospital, then became a university. If you look carefully, you can still see the original Gothic portal from the old hospital days. Since the early 1900s, two very special guardians have been watching over the City Hall entrance - enormous paper-mâché giants! Meet Tofol and Francinaina, the beloved giant peasant couple who are absolutely iconic at Palma's traditional festivals. You should definitely pop into the lobby to say hello to them! Now, take a look at that magnificent olive tree right here in the square. This beauty is several centuries old, and some people claim it's actually the oldest olive tree in the world - though that's pretty hard to prove! Originally from the north of the island, it was carefully replanted here in 1970. But here's the fun part - look closely at that twisted, gnarled trunk. Can you see how the shapes seem to form a weathered face? Congratulations - you've just met the famous witch of Plaça de Cort!
