Just a few metres to your right, you’ll spot an old stone gateway—that’s the Portal de la Valldigna, one of the last surviving pieces of Valencia’s Muslim wall, dating back to 1440. Back then, the city’s defensive walls ran through this area, marking the divide between the Arab and Christian parts of the city. After the Reconquista, Christians and Muslims lived side by side—but not always peacefully. Often facing persecution, the Muslim population withdrew into their own neighborhood, protected by a separate wall. This gateway is one of the few remaining traces of that time. The Portal de la Valldigna is built in the Valencian Gothic style and features a rounded arch. If you take a closer look, you’ll see a coat of arms and an inscription carved into the stone, indicating its name and historical origin.
