Theaterplatz is one of Basel’s liveliest cultural squares. Right in front of you stands Theater Basel, the city’s main theater, opened in its current form in 1975. Opera, theater and ballet all share the stage here, with productions that are recognized well beyond Switzerland. The building’s modern architecture, with its large suspended concrete canopy, gives a strong character to the square and reflects the important place of artistic creation in the city. Just beside it, you can’t miss the famous Tinguely Fountain, where you’re standing now. It was installed between 1975 and 1977 on the site of the former theater. Created by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, this playful artwork is made up of large metal sculptures that move, spin and spray water in a constant mechanical ballet. It brings to mind both the world of performance and the spirit of Basel’s Carnival, capturing its energy and mischievous creativity.
