The church on your right is St Luke Church, but locals colloquially refer to it as the bombed church. This former Anglican parish was built in the early 19th century. At the time it was known as the Doctors' Church because of its proximity to beautiful the Rodney Street, famous for the number of doctors practising there. As you can imagine, St Luke's church fate changed dramatically during World War II. The church was hit by an incendiary device on 6 May 1941, leaving only its burnt-out shell. This happened during the May Blitz in Liverpool, a terrible air raid that lasted 7 days. Liverpool was the second most bombed city after London, due to the importance of its port, which was crucial to the British war effort. To commemorate all those who lost their lives during the war, it was decided to leave St Luke's Church as it was. This burnt shell of a memorial reminds us, in the midst of this lively district, that the carefree lifestyle we are privileged to enjoy is only possible in a peaceful environment.
