You’re now on 16th Street at Glenarm Place, right in the heart of downtown Denver. This nearly two-kilometer pedestrian street was inaugurated in 1982, part of a major push to breathe new life into the city center and make it more walkable. The mastermind behind the project was the world-renowned I.M. Pei, who also designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. Look down and you’ll notice the patterned granite paving stones beneath your feet. These geometric designs are inspired by traditional Southwestern motifs, turning the entire street into an open-air artwork. This place is alive at all hours. Shops, restaurants, cinemas, street performers, musicians, tourists, locals... 16th Street never sleeps. On your left, you’ll see the Denver Pavilions, a hub of big-name stores and rooftop terraces. You might even spot a small bus gliding through. This is the Free MallRide, a free shuttle that runs the length of the street. Perfect if you want to explore but don’t feel like walking the whole way. Since 2022, 16th Street has been undergoing a fresh transformation: new benches, more trees and greenery, upgraded lighting, play spaces. The street is evolving with the times, while keeping its original spirit. As of 2025, it’s officially known as simply “16th Street,” with a new motto to match, “The Denver Way.” So go ahead, take it all in.
