History Colorado Center

On your left is the History Colorado Center, a modern, interactive, and captivating museum dedicated to the rich and rugged history of this state. Inside, you can hop into a pioneer wagon, watch a virtual tornado sweep across the Great Plains, or listen to the powerful voices of Colorado’s first peoples. If you don’t have time to head inside, or if the sunshine is just too tempting, don’t worry. Make yourself comfortable, and let me take you on a quick journey through Colorado’s story. It all begins thousands of years ago with the Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi, the first builders of the American Southwest. From the 6th to the 14th century, they carved entire villages into sandstone cliffs, like at Mesa Verde. These remarkable cliff dwellings had hundreds of rooms, sacred kivas, granaries for corn, and reflected a rich and complex society. They eventually left the cliffs behind, either because of climate change, conflict, migration, or all the above! But they didn’t disappear. Their descendants live on today, especially among the Hopi, Zuni, and Pueblo nations. Other Indigenous peoples later shaped this land: the Utes, Apaches, Cheyennes, Arapahos, each with their own territories, languages, and traditions. Then came the first European explorers: the Spanish in the 16th century, who named rivers, mountains, and the state, Colorado, after the reddish tint of its waters. In the 19th century, French trappers arrived, followed by waves of American settlers. Everything changed in 1858 when gold was discovered near the Front Range. Thousands flooded into Denver, then just a tent town, seeking fortune. The railroad soon followed, mountains became mines, and tensions with Native tribes escalated. In 1876, exactly 100 years after the founding of the United States, Colorado became the 38th state , earning it the nickname ‘the Centennial State.’ From that point on, its story unfolded between snowy peaks, civil rights struggles, oil booms, and a deep love of the outdoors. Even today, Colorado remains a land of contrasts, fiercely independent, proudly rooted in its past, and always looking forward. So there you go, your super quick tour of the museum! If you’ve got a little time to spare, step inside. There’s always something fascinating waiting to be discovered.
