Lower Manhattan is part of the borough of Manhattan, one of New York City's five boroughs. It's the southernmost part of the island, home to the Financial District, as well as neighborhoods like Tribeca, Little Italy, Chinatown, and Greenwich Village. You're actually in the oldest area in the city. This is where the Dutch settlers first settled in the 17th century, in what is now the Financial District. In fact, it is believed that they were the ones who named the island Manhattan. Apparently, it's derived from the word "Manna-hata," meaning "island of many hills." Lower Manhattan, with its world-famous neighborhoods, is thus a must-see, drawing crowds of tourists every year.
