This beautifully sculpted façade is the entrance to Mission High School. It's the city's oldest high school, still located on its original site. Initially, in 1890, school was held in various houses in the neighborhood, but in 1898 construction was completed on a handsome 3-story brick building in the Italian Renaissance style. The building survived the 1906 earthquake and served as a refuge for local residents. Today, according to World Report, 91% of the students at this multicultural high school come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and it was the first public high school to welcome an LGBTQ assembly. Quite an incredible event for a high school known for having been the strictest in all of San Francisco. Fans should also know that guitarist Carlos Santana attended this school.
