The building on the corner here, at Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, is sometimes nicknamed “Jessica’s Church,” though that isn’t an official name. It’s actually the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, more recently known as Mosaic Hollywood. The current structure dates from 1960 and was designed by architect Howard Elwell in a postwar modern style, recognizable by its fan-shaped form, curved walls, and an amphitheater-style auditorium built for optimal acoustics. For nearly a century, this site was an important center for Christian Science, a religious movement founded in the United States in 1879. In 2011, it was taken over by Mosaic, a contemporary megachurch, which occupied it until June 2025. It’s called a megachurch because it brings together thousands of worshippers across multiple gathering spaces, in the same city or even in different countries. A demolition plan in 2015 was abandoned after the building was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument, ensuring its protection. Today, the building stands vacant and closed to the public, yet it remains a striking architectural landmark in the Hollywood landscape.
