In the 19th century, city laws prohibited Chinese people from settling outside of Chinatown That's why you'll find the oldest temples nestled in this neighborhood. As you walk along, on your left, you'll spot the Tin How Temple. Foundedin 1852. It is the oldest Taoist temple in San Francisco and also the oldest active Chinese temple in the United States. It is dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu. "Tin How" translates to "Empress of Heaven" in Cantonese. The temple's wooden altar, a true work of art, miraculously survived the earthquake. If you wish to admire it, just follow the fragrant trail of incense wafting along the stairways. While there's no entry fee, donations to help maintain the temple are greatly appreciated. Keep in mind, though, that photography isn't allowed inside, so capture the moment with your eyes!
