This Croatian city and municipality has a lot to offer in terms of "food and indulgence". The city's inhabitants are known for being fond of delicious dishes based on fish and fresh vegetables, accompanied by delicious glasses of wine to wash it all down. In other words, it's the perfect place for pescatarians and vegetarians! But for meat eaters, wait, don't leave just yet! Dubrovnik also contains many meat-based dishes in its lands that will make your little carnivorous hearts swoon. The advantage of this cuisine, often described as Mediterranean, is that it offers you a multitude of varied choices with rather healthy and balanced meals. So, shall we explore all this? Let's dive right in!

What to eat in Dubrovnik?
1. Pork and Sauerkraut Stew
Know that Dubrovnik is endowed with legendary multiculturalism. You will therefore find in this ranking dishes from neighboring countries, such as pork and sauerkraut stew which is originally Hungarian. This hot pot is one of the culinary trends of Croatia, very widespread in the city of Dubrovnik. The tender pork and slightly tangy cream soften the crunchy sauerkraut, with onions and a drizzle of olive oil. You will only be satisfied and have a smile on your lips!
2. Green Vegetable Medley
Vegetables are put in the spotlight! Discover this feast based on carrots, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, peas... Cooked with fresh products from agriculture around the city, it's a light dish that helps you reconcile with certain vegetables that may have displeased you during your childhood. The vegetable medley tends to make your taste buds tingle while providing you with vitamins and important nutritional intake. After tasting, you'll feel great, that's for sure!
3. Octopus Salad

If you have rarely tasted octopus in your life, then this trip to Dubrovnik will be an opportunity for you to eat the good old crunchy octopus salad from the region. Very renowned throughout the country, this Croatian specialty was born a very long time ago. It can therefore be cooked from different angles, but is mainly composed of pieces of octopus and olive oil (which accompanies many Croatian dishes by the way). Very aromatic and slightly spicy, due to the different herbs that accompany the dish, you can also enjoy it with tomatoes and potatoes. Exquisite.
4. Grilled Sardines

We know that many of you avoid eating sardines (because of the breath they can give). But know that it's one of the most filling (inexpensive) fish containing lots of proteins and nutrients good for health. Packed with calcium, this dish is the specialty of restaurants in the city of Dubrovnik, as well as Croatian fishermen. With potatoes and a small salad on the side, it's a taste explosion that you'll have in your mouth, for sure!
5. Rožata

This medieval dessert is very appreciated around the Adriatic Sea and draws its origins thanks to the city of Dubrovnik. If you're wondering what it contains? A bit like a normal crème brûlée: essentially milk, sugar and eggs. Topped with caramel sauce, the Ragusans (inhabitants of Dubrovnik) like to enjoy it with red fruits. Cooked very slowly in a bain-marie, it's a sweet delicacy that remains present in your mind for a long time, and in the corners of your stomach that becomes nostalgic at the simple thought of it. Yum-yum!
6. Walnut Roll

Better known as "orehnjača", here's a must-have that you'll find absolutely everywhere throughout Croatia, and Dubrovnik is no exception to the rule! It's generally a dish that locals like to eat for special occasions: traditional festivals or birthdays. It's amazing what you can do with dough, sugar, milk, cinnamon, and a few walnuts! This little roll so pleasant to look at whose enticing smell intoxicates you is a little gem.
7. Brudet

If there had to be a cult fish dish that the entire city of Dubrovnik had to approve as being a must-have: it would undoubtedly be Brudet. It's a harmonious fish stew with a thousand and one flavors. Very easy to prepare, find different varieties of fish from the Adriatic Sea on your plate garnished with fresh tomatoes and herbs that give a nice color to this thick soup. Invigorating, it's a hot dish that is enjoyed in the evening, and encourages you to dive headfirst into a sweet dream lulled by the calm and peaceful night of the city.
8. Quince Cake

This originally Danish cake is a soft delicacy that is unanimous among young and old alike! Usually cooked with apples, Ragusans like to add quinces, whose natural acidity enhances the taste. These are wrapped in a creamy dough and enjoyed just out of the oven! It's typically the kind of food you'll find in local bakeries in the city, and which can be enjoyed with a delicious coffee in hand, a cup of tea, or even a glass of wine.
9. Dubrovnik Wine

Know that the wines of the Dubrovnik region are among the oldest: according to experts, it was the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans who cultivated the first grapes during ancient times. In the sea, some amphorae (containers used to transport wine) have been found proving that many crossings containing liters of wine took place at sea. White wine, red wine, these sweet nectars are to be tried at all costs. We especially recommend you to favor the "Plavac Mali" whose intense color of small fruits has earned it a place in the top of the best wines in the region.
10. Buzara

We finish this ranking with a last mussel-based dish. Typical of Dalmatia, Buzara is unanimous in Dubrovnik! We generally use shrimp, as well as other crustaceans to cook this dish. Its particularity? Beyond the olive oil and breadcrumbs added, you will find in your dish a small amount of seawater from the various shellfish used for the recipe. Accompanied by a glass of white wine, it's even better!
