What to do around Auxerre?

1 – Discover the vineyard around Auxerre

The Chablis vineyard has national and international renown, red, white and rosé wines that you will have the pleasure of tasting in family properties, some of which have specialized in wine for several centuries.

This Chablis estate has been run by the same family since the 15th century, you will have the opportunity to visit a cellar dating from the 12th century while tasting the wine produced on site by winemakers passionate about their craft who will tell you about their ancestral know-how and their terroir. Wines and crémants are produced on this wine estate.

A heritage rich in history and anecdotes nestled in the heart of the Chablis region, this is what you will find when visiting the Laroche estate, including notably the Obédiencerie, the former monastery of the monks of Saint-Martin. The monks were the first wine producers. Produced on this estate are Burgundy wines, petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis premier cru and grands crus. More than 1,000 years of history are attached to this wine estate.

2 – Go on wine hiking tours

The surroundings of Auxerre offer a hilly landscape in the middle of vineyards ideal for hikers of all levels. Circuits from 8 to 33 km, with more or less difficulty, but always for the pleasure of the eyes: 12th century castles at Maligny or 17th century at Poinchy, the picturesque village of Fontenay, the castle of Chemilly-sur Serein, the church of Saint-Nicolas de Fleys, the village of Gallic origin at Courgis, the miraculous spring of Fontaine Saint-Potention...

3 – Stroll in Chablis

The town of Chablis is to be discovered: the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, the Obédiencerie, the Porte Noël... Are all places to visit.

  • Chablis has at least 5,000 hectares of vines, its reputation is well established, you will have the opportunity to taste: Chablis Grand Cru, Chablis Premier Cru, Chablis and Petit-Chablis.
  • The gastronomy: Ham with Chablis, Duché Biscuit, pillar of Chablis, gougères or Chablis cake are all specialties to discover in Chablis. If you are a fan, don't hesitate to push open the door of the Maison de l'Andouillette!

It takes place on the 4th weekend of October: baptism of the new vintage, tasting, brass bands, local gastronomy, walks in the vineyards and activities for children.

  • The 1st glorious: on the 3rd Saturday of November, at the château du Clos de Vougeot, the largest annual chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin meets, followed by a grand dinner at the castle (costume and evening dress required).
  • The 2nd glorious: on the following Sunday at the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, the auction sales of the Hospices de Beaune take place, on the program: street shows, gala dinners organized by Burgundian brotherhoods, and prestige tastings.
  • The 3rd glorious: on the following Monday, at the Paulée de Meursault, a traditional end-of-harvest meal with winemakers, merchants and clients.

4 – Take a boat or barge ride

The banks of the Yonne are full of charm, board a boat or a barge to access incredible panoramas of Auxerre and its surroundings and enjoy an exceptional view of historical monuments.

The Nivernais canal is a good way to explore this region for a day cruise, or why not, by renting a barge for the week or boarding a hotel barge for moments of pure relaxation and multiple discoveries lulled by the lapping of water...

What places to visit around Auxerre?

1 – MuséoParc Alésia

Relive the battle that pitted Caesar against Vercingetorix through ancient objects, multimedia terminals, reproductions of war machines, films, models... Visit this museum in a fun way with educational workshops, historical demonstrations and audio guides. You can see the giant statue of Vercingetorix commissioned by Napoleon III, 6.60 m high.

2 – The Bailly Lapierre caves

These caves are called a jewel, because they are not only the birthplace of Crémant de Bourgogne, they are also a simply exceptional site: an underground stone quarry. These stones were used to build the most beautiful monuments in France such as Notre-Dame de Paris, the Panthéon and Chartres cathedral.

3 – The castle of Ancy-le-Franc

An extraordinary Renaissance castle created by Serlio, François 1st's architect. You can admire within its walls a superb collection of murals (16th, 17th centuries), one of the most important in France, richly decorated rooms, French gardens as well as flower beds that received an award in 2018.

4 – The medieval construction site of Guédelon

Craftsmen: quarriers, stonecutters, masons, lumberjacks, carpenters, blacksmiths, tilers, carters, ropemakers... Work on this site to build a 13th century fortress from scratch using the means used then, they will show you and explain what their craft consists of and what their role is in this immense construction site.

5 – The cyclorail of Puisaye

A ride on railbikes on an old railway line from 10 to 30 km, from 2 hours to a full day, with the possibility of bringing your picnic or stopping near a restaurant.

6 – Domaine du Moulin Rouge – Trout fishing

In Saint-Martin-sur-Ouanne, spend half a day or a full day in the cool, by a lake, with or without a fishing license, for a discovery of trout fishing to share with family or friends.

7 – Lake Bourdon

Multiple water sports and other activities are available on this lake: rowing, sailing, fishing, hiking, equestrian leisure, pedal boats, paddle, kayak polo... Swimming on the supervised beach in summer.
