What to eat in Colmar?
1. Sauerkraut
Let's start with a classic: Alsatian Sauerkraut. With tender cabbage, potatoes, sausage and bacon, this dish makes an excellent meal during a harsh and freezing winter. You'll be happy to taste it with your family. The smell of cooked meat mixed with vegetables and cabbage fermented in brine is simply to die for! To this day, sauerkraut is THE emblematic dish of Alsace. Everything is simmered in delicious white wine, which Colmar has the secret to.
2. Baeckeoffe

Here's another traditional dish specific to the Alsace region that quickly emerged in Colmar as it proves to be delicious! Extremely simple to cook, baeckeoffe is a tender mixture of lamb, pork, and beef meats enhanced with several varieties of vegetables from organic farming. It's a hot dish that we love to eat for dinner, after it has cooked for about three good hours in a sealed terrine. Its cooking gives it a particularly mild taste that is easily digested. It's the dish we all look forward to discovering if we plan to visit Colmar one day!
3. Coq au Riesling

We continue with meat dishes, admittedly, but this time, it's the chicken's turn to be highlighted. If you love white meat, you'll be served! Coq au Riesling is cooked with mushrooms, potatoes, shallots, a little butter (to add even more tenderness), a brandy widely used in Colmar which is none other than "Marc d'Alsace", flour and fresh cream. The people of Colmar tend to let the rooster simmer for nearly 24 hours (yes, it's necessary) in white wine to bring more flavors to the meat. Know that in Alsace we love cooking with Riesling!
4. Munster (cheese)

Now for dairy products. Munster is a delicious and creamy soft cheese made from raw or pasteurized cow's milk from Alsace. Although it has a strong smell, which can sometimes put some people off, it nonetheless remains a tasty dish and really good to eat on a slice of fresh bread. Its smell, round shape, and slightly orange rind distinguish it from other cheeses, it is very regularly sold in town at the small local market. It is known to reveal an effective terroir bouquet in the mouth.
5. Riewele soup

Riewele soup is all of Alsace in your plate. Contrary to what one might think at first glance when looking at the dish's consistency, it's a rich meal that fills you up quickly. Prepared with small dumpling pasta, the broth is cooked with an egg and spices. Its texture is quite thick, and the smell is enticing. It's a meal you can eat in the evening or at noon, and very easy to prepare. However, many people from Colmar like to eat it in small quantities as a starter with some slices of bread or a small salad.
6. Tarte Flambée with smoked bacon

Yum-yum! Coming from Alsace, tarte flambée is very widespread in Colmar, and we understand why! A thin crust, topped with some pieces of smoked bacon and white cheese with a pinch of aromatics and onions. A delight. Not adding yeast to the dough prevents it from rising (like a pizza slice) and therefore makes it immediately crispier and easier to digest. There are many varieties of Alsatian tarte flambée: among others we count the forestière tarte flambée and the gratinéed tarte flambée. All are to be tested!
7. Kougelhopf

A little room for sugar dear friend! Kougelhopf (even if it's difficult to pronounce) is one of the most consumed desserts in Colmar, in addition to tarts. This big brioche with such a unique shape and dusted with powdered sugar is cooked with almonds as well as raisins. It's an excellent dish to start the day well during breakfast, accompanied by a cup of tea or coffee. Often described as "the hat cake", it turns out to be rich, substantial, and is often served during big events.
8. Hospices de Colmar

Here's a white wine typical of Colmar born from organic vines. It has a quite special characteristic, as it contains many fruity aromas, such as orange blossom. It makes an excellent aperitif and can be consumed during dessert as well. It's clear that this wine will be offered among the favorites if you ever decide to visit the different cellars and exceptional wines in Colmar. It's sure and certain that the sweet nectar that will flow down your throat will make your taste buds tingle and won't leave you indifferent.
9. Alsatian Apple Tart

In Colmar, take the time to taste an apple tart with good shortcrust pastry, apples picked at the right moment, and a cream based on eggs and sugar. Easy recipe, it's the kind of dessert our grandmothers cooked for us when we went to see them on Sunday afternoons. Aaahhh, so many childhood memories recalled in a single bite. The Alsatian apple tart widely consumed in Colmar appears on all restaurant menus in the city. Enjoy your tasting!
10. Pinot Noir

We finish our ranking with a little sweet touch, Pinot Noir. Originally from Burgundy, this wine that is both mysterious and exquisite is also produced in Colmar. This grape variety gives birth to fruity or light wines, perfect as an aperitif with a slice of cheese, the munster. Having a wide aromatic range, it's an invigorating dish, ranked among the most planted varieties in the world. So, are you ready to take a sip?
